Sukhna lake is a natural paradise located in the ' The City beautiful' Chandigarh . It is the only water reservoir in this city. It was build in 1958 and lake has just 3 square km of water body. Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary is located near Sukhna Lake , most of the people don't know about this place. It forms the part of Lake's catchment area spreading over an area of 2600 hectares. Sanctuary mostly opens during winter season as during this period migratory birds return. Here you can see different kinds of beautiful birds and animals. The sanctuary has numerous ponds and lakes created by earthen check dams.
The migratory water-birds generally arrive in the beginning of October and peaks in mid-January. The most commonly sighted species include the Drake, the Shelducks, the Grey Heron, the Crested Grebe, the Spot-billed duck, the Purple Heron, the Black winged Slit, the Sandpiper, the Common Coot and many more. The sanctuary is visited by 10,000 birds annually.
